MoralGenius For Home Schoolers
According
to a Department of Education study published in
2006, approximately 1.1 million students (1,096,000)
were being homeschooled in the United States in the
spring of 2003, an increase from the estimated
850,000 students who were being homeschooled in the
spring of 1999. In addition, the percentage of
the entire student population who were being
homeschooled increased from 1.7 percent in 1999 to
2.2 percent in 2003. The most important
reasons for homeschooling cited by parents included
concern about the environment of other schools, such
as safety, drugs, negative peer pressure, concern
about the quality of academic instruction and the desire to
provide religious or moral instruction.
The MoralGenius Ethics Training system speaks
directly to the need to provide instruction in moral
/ ethical behavior. We
base our approach on sets of cards, a format that is
likely familiar to children, closely resembling the
way they often learn things like the alphabet or
numbers. Also, each of our cards is meant to
be an occasion for you the parent to talk with your
child about a character trait or value.
Without something like these cards to provide the
occasion, such conversations between you and your child
are less likely to happen.
Each MoralGenius™ card is
designed to present a real-life, age-appropriate
scenario as well as one or more questions about that
scenario and some possible responses--all designed to
get your child thinking. With this approach,
children have a chance to practice thinking for
themselves--and they should then be better able to deal
with actual situations that come up in their own lives.
In most cases, the cards don't offer "right" answers versus "wrong" answers. If they did, the result would be simple rote learning--and your child would be able to "finish" a set of cards in no time at all. Instead, for the most part the cards encourage your child to see a range of responses and to come to understand, with your guidance, why some responses are "better" or "more appropriate" than others. In this way, solid character traits and values have a better chance of becoming part of who they are rather than something they merely know "by heart."
